Earth Day 2019

Our earth needs attention.

We need to use the natural resources provided to us carefully. Since 1970, institutions are trying to promote awareness and warn people about global warming. But, are we living on this earth responsibly?

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22.

Currently, around 193 countries celebrate it across the globe. It focuses on the environmental issues that the whole world is facing. Sometimes, it is extended into a full 7-day event – Earth Week. Each day focuses on some activities that promote green living. The Earth Day Network works on protecting human health, endangered species protection and safeguarding the natural environment.

Climate change is happening and no one can deny it.

We can feel the shift of temperature ourselves. Earlier peak winter used to start in December. Now, winter comes in January. We experience so many non-seasonal rains. The list goes on. The comic strip Pogo made a poster for Earth Day, saying – “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

It is our duty to do something so that our future generation can still inhale clean air, drink clean water and have a healthy fertile land to grow crops.

Some of the things that we can do are:

  • Use public transport

We should use public transport to control air pollution. If you are going in the same direction, then try to carpool with other people. When travelling for shorter distance try to walk or take a ride on the cycle. It is a good form of exercise also.

Read our article, Transport Options in Patna, to know more about the alternatives available.

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle

If it is feasible, then try to buy second-hand items. Recycle your electronic items. Donate things that you are not using anymore, but can be used by someone else.

  • Conserve water

Water is such a valuable resource. Normally people pay no attention to water wastage. Check your taps, don’t let the water overflow. Drink all the water in your glass. And, if need be, then instead of throwing the extra water in the wash basin, pour it in a flower pot.

  • Save electricity

Switch off lights, fans, AC and laptops when not needed. Read the Power Consumption star rating while buying electronic items. Use energy efficient CNG bulbs instead of light bulbs.

  • Say no to plastic bags

Plastic bags choke up so many aquatic animals every year. It also causes land pollution. Switch to jute or cloth bags. Carry your own bag while shopping.

Read our article, I am not a Plastic Bag, to know more about the alternatives available.

  • Have plants at home

If you can’t plant a tree, still have some greenery around you. They can also work as home decor items.

  • Use lesser tissues

Even I have a habit of using a lot of tissue papers, especially when I am out for dinner or using the public restroom. Try using the hand dryer instead.

  • Save Paper donate old books, save paper

Just like for tissues, we need to cut down so many trees to print books. Save paper, donate old books for others to use.

  • Educate others

Educate others about environmental issues and how can we contribute to make the earth a better place to be.

We, at Patna Diaries, would like to encourage you to do your bit and be responsible citizens of the earth. If you also have any tips, do let us know in the comment box below.

Happy Earth Day! 🙂
