Personality Development Workshops; Do they really develop our personality?

We have all heard the term – Personality Development Workshops. Well, what I want to talk about in this blog is how that word – Personality Development is misused.

What is Personality?

Personality is a Latin word derived from “persona”.

Personality can be defined as a characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Each individual thinks, feels and acts in a distinctive and unique way which characterises a person’s response throughout life. The personality of an individual will influence their behaviour in different situations.

Development of Personality

The personality of an individual is relatively stable and predictable. It is generally resistant to sudden changes. It emerges early and continues to slightly change in meaningful ways throughout the lifespan. Thus, personality development is a life-long process that happens to every individual due to a lot of factors.

These factors include:
  • Biological Factors like physical defects, physical attractiveness, health determinants
  • Psychological Factors like intelligence, emotional condition, self-identity, achievements
  • Environmental Factors like social acceptance, deprivation, family setting

What do they teach in workshops?

When we talk about Personality Development Workshop, then what we really try to do is teach people the necessary skills to enhance some aspects of their personality. It helps an individual to gain confidence and high self-esteem.

Thus, the workshops generally teach you how to work efficiently and make the most out of your already existing personality.

They will not be drastic changes, but adapting and soft skills that help you cope better and behave accordingly in the environment.  For instance, an introvert person will not become an ambivert or extrovert after such a workshop, but yes, he /she can overcome the fear of public speaking through practice.

According to me, they should be called personality enhancement classes or skill development classes, instead of a personality development class.

So, the things we can expect from a personality enhancement class are:
  1. Help you overcome negative attitudes
  2. Teach how to communicate with others in a better and confident way
  3. Help you plan strategies to cope with difficult situations
  4. Work on self-esteem and self-confidence
  5. Teach stress management skills
  6. Teach interpersonal skills
  7. Help you in time management
  8. Give you tips about group dynamics and leadership

The Need for Skill Development Classes

It is very necessary for students to attend such classes to adapt better. If you are going to a new place to stay for study or work purpose, then you need to learn some things in advance. These facts and skills will help you adapt better in your new environment.

A lot of organisations when they send their employees to a new country teach them about the culture of that country. Things you should say to blend in the community. They also let them know about the things you should not say which can make people uncomfortable in that community.

It certainly helps a person to be confident, when they face a new situation, with some prior preparation. This confidence definitely helps an individual to succeed in their pursuit.
