Youth involvement in crime

Youth is the strength and pillar of our society. They are the future of our society. But nowadays, the involvement of our youth in committing crimes is quite disturbing. These days the news of theft, burglary and murders has increased but what is more threatening is that average age of criminal’s involvement in crime is decreasing day by day. The increasing number of youth involvement in crimes is alarming. The crimes committed by minors are dealt with by the juvenile courts and the justice system.

According to released figures of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), almost 60% crimes against minors are done by youngsters of between the age of 16 and 18. This accounts for 28,830 out of 43,506 crimes registered against minors under the Indian Penal code (IPC) and the Special Local Law(SLL)

Cause

According to many experts, there are many several reasons why youths are diverting to the wrong pathway against their career. The main reason is unemployment. Many young graduates restore to looting and stealing of valuable items to meet their daily money needs. The main reason for involvement of youth in crime is lack of job. A study has confirmed that at least 60% of young criminals are unemployed.

Deteriorating family value is another reason for the high rates of teenage criminals. There is a famous quote – “We Are What We see”. There is a great impact of the atmosphere provided by the family to the youth. The relationship among family members is getting worse day by day. Teenagers generally see parental fighting and domestic violence at home which in turn to leads them to juvenile violence. There are very few families that live together with a sense of togetherness. Both parents are busy with their jobs and are not able to spend much time with their children. They fail to understand what is going in their child’s mind. If the child gets into bad company, then it is obvious that they will learn bad things.

Solution

We are in dire need of a better education system. We need huge modifications in term of upbringing and social awareness. The youngsters are is sensitive. They need care and protection. Parent’s need to give time to their children to know about their problem and state of mind. Child welfare, mental health, education, creating more job opportunity and social service are the solutions to stop this menace before it becomes big.
