Five little known fact about The Constitution of India

5 little known facts about the Constitution of India

As I child, I always had confusion between Independence Day and Republic Day, particularly about the year since we have started celebrating them. Independence day is, of course, the day when India got independence by British Raj in 1947. But, then what is Republic day celebrated for? India celebrates Republic Day to remember the date on which our Indian Constitution came into effect on 26th January 1950. Here are five little known facts about the constitution of India.

Fact 1 – Constitution of India and the Bihari connection

The members of the Constituent assembly wrote the Constitution of India. We all know that Dr. Rajendra Prasad from Bihar was the president of this assembly. Interestingly, out of a total of almost 400 members, the assembly constituted of 36 members from Bihar.

Fact 2 – The draft of the Constitution of India came to Patna

Dr. Sachchidanand Sinha, also from Bihar, was the first interim chairman of the Constituent Assembly.  He was a lawyer and journalist by profession.

He was the oldest member of the assembly. His signature was necessary on the draft of the Indian constitution. As he was extremely ill and could not travel to Delhi. Thus, they sent the draft of the constitution to Patna to get his signature.

Fact 3 – Indian Constitution is the longest constitution in the world

Originally, the constitution had 395 Articles divided into 22 parts and 8 Schedules. Currently, it contains 448 Articles and 12 Schedules. In total 103 amendments have been done on the constitution till now.

Fact 4 -The original Indian Constitution is handwritten

Prem Behari Narain Raizada wrote the entire constitution in beautiful calligraphy. He wrote both the Hindi and English versions of the constitution. The artists from Shantiniketan decorated each page.

The original copies of the Constitution of India are in the Library of the Parliament of India, Delhi.

Fact 5 – Our national emblem was adopted on 26th January 1950

The national emblem of a country is the symbol of authority. It generally represents the ideology of the country’s constitutional philosophy. On 26th January 1950, our national emblem was adopted. It is an adaptation of the Lion Capital atop the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath. It is combined with the National Motto Satyameva Jayate (Truth alone triumphs).

So, be proud of our constitution and responsibly use the rights that we get as citizens of a democratic country.
